Coaches Corner: Inside the BCS Title Game

Scouting the BCS Title Game
By Matt Miller
The Jan. 7 matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and LSU Tigers featured the two most successful teams of the 2007 college football season, as well as two of the most respected and consistent coaching staffs in the game.
The talent on both sides of the field was undeniable, with Ohio State expected to lose up to 13 underclassmen to the NFL Draft and will see at least three seniors selected in the April draft. LSU counts 11 seniors that will all be drafted, as well as three juniors who could all be first round picks in the next two years. The talent on the two rosters alone could produce an entire first round at some point.
It is certain that these two teams will shape the 2008 NFL draft, and many for years to come, but how will the two teams directly affect the '08 class?
Ohio State
QB Todd Boeckman*
Boeckman had his worst game as a Buckeye last night, but the 23-year old junior may be feeling the pressure to get into the League before he’s 25. Boeckman has the look of a system quarterback, and was caught consistently backing away from pressure last night.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
WR Brian Robiskie*
Robiskie has played well all season, and was a valuable slot receiver on the 2006 team. He does not have elite speed or size, but he is a smart route runner and gets good separation. He has consistent hands, but there are going to be questions about his ability to pull away from defenders in the NFL.
2008 Verdict: 2nd round pick
WR Brian Hartline*
Hartline is a better player than he showed in the title game Monday night. The drops we were seeing by him over the middle were not consistent with what we saw during the season. Hartline reminds us a lot of 2007 1st round pick Anthony Gonzalez.
2008 Verdict: 3rd round pick
TE Rory Nichols*
A little used tight end, but a good run blocker and a big target in
the passing game. Nichols needs to refine his route running, but he is more of a traditional tight end. He’s not an amazing athlete, but he showed during this game that he has the ability to get open and can be a contributor in the run game.
2008 Verdict: 4th round pick
OT Alex Boone*
If you had turned the game off after the first quarter, Boone would have been one of the best players in the game. He did struggle late in the game against the aggressive LSU pass rush. It seemed like he was slow coming out of his stance and getting into position. Looks to be a dominant run blocker, but his pass steps might be questioned. It is worth mentioning that LSU was bringing 5 and 6 blitzers at times.
2008 Verdict: 2nd round pick
OT Kirk Barton
While most players will not be hurt by Bowl Game showings, Barton’s stock could be on the decline after last night. He had a lot of trouble handling the power rushes and was really over-powered at times by Tyson Jackson.
2008 Verdict: 3rd round pick
OG Steve Rehring*
Rehring was impressive in the run game all night, he really
established himself as a top run blocker during this game. He did struggle all night with defensive tackles Glenn Dorsey and Marlon Favorite, but most guards will. Rehring was often asked to block one-on-one while the center helped Person block Dorsey.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
OG Ben Person*
Being asked to block Glenn Dorsey is really not fair to any one
player. Person did a good job in the run game at walling Dorsey down and using help to control him. The Buckeyes seemed content to run left most of the game, away from Dorsey. This worked until they had to abandon the run to score quickly.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
DE Vernon Gholston*
Gholston was again impressive last night coming off the right side of the line. He played at times in a two-point stance and was very dangerous rushing the passer. He was able to keep his balance when being cut blocked and used his hands well to keep the blockers off his body. His stock continues to rise.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
DT Nader Abdallah*
LSU was able to run up the middle at will last night, especially on
third and short. Abdallah was not impressive last night at any point in the run.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
LB Marcus Freeman*
He has been over-shadowed all season, but those watching Freeman specifically last night saw a very talented linebacker. His versatility makes him very dangerous, he was stepping up well to stop the run and getting into coverage to shut down the flats. Freeman is a player who is going to shoot up our board should he declare.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
LB James Laurinaitis*
What’s not to like? Number 33 was all over the field last night.
Whether he was dropping into Cover 2 or coming up to plug both A gaps in run support. Laurinatis has shown that he is capable of manning the middle linebacker spot immediately in the NFL.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
LB Larry Grant
Grant has been hiding behind the talent juniors at linebacker, but last night was his coming out party. Grant was in on every play, showing this athleticism and instincts in stopping the LSU offense. The Tigers eventually started keying on Grant when trying to run the ball. His stock is rising.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
CB Malcolm Jenkins*
Jenkins was moved all over the field last night, but his primary goal was shutting down LSU receiver Early Doucet. Jenkins was also used a lot as a free safety, playing in what appeared to be a true cover 3 on first look. Jenkins is a ball-hawking cover man, but he was beaten once by Doucet for a big gain. He is still a lock to be a top 15 player in the ‘08 draft.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
FS Anderson Russell*
Russell wasn’t used as much as we thought he would be last night, but this was more because of the LSU running game than anything else. He has talent, and good range from the safety position. It was nice to see him aggressively running the alleys to attack the run game.
2008 Verdict: 3rd round pick
K Ryan Pretorius*
Pretorius was booming his kick offs and was consistent in hitting his field goals. The blocked kick looked to be more of a protection issue, but the distance did require the ball to come off low. He insists he has no interest in leaving for the NFL.
2008 Verdict: 5th round pick
LSU
QB Matt Flynn
Despite the win, Flynn was not impressive last night. He throws from his shoulder and almost shot puts the ball. He lacks the arm strength to attack a defense. His mobility is intriguing, but he does not look to be a future NFL quarterback.
2008 Verdict: 7th round pick
RB Jacob Hester
Any questions about his ability to play in the NFL were answered
Monday. Hester ran with authority between the tackles, even showing some speed when he was able to hit the crease. His vision and patience are separating him from more athletic backs right now.
2008 Verdict: 4th round pick
WR Early Doucet
Ohio State keyed on Doucet and forced LSU to use secondary targets most of the game. He did show some toughness going over the middle and then breaking a few tackles to score late in the game. Many feel like he could be the top senior wide receiver.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
OT Carnell Stewart
Stewart was abused at times by the Ohio State pass rush. He continues to look short armed to be a tackle. His strength was even questionable last night against the bull rush. Stewart may be a candidate to move to guard.
2008 Verdict: 6th round pick
OG Herman Johnson*
Was the powering force behind a lot of the third-and-short conversions last night. LSU was comfortable running behind Johnson most of the night. He will likely be the top guard for the 2009 draft.
2008 Verdict: 2nd round pick
DE Tyson Jackson*
He played like a person ready to suit up on Sunday’s. Jackson was using a combination of speed and power to get around and over right tackle Kirk Barton, who is considered a day one player. The speed of Jackson has been underrated and his talent as an all-around end was on display.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
DT Glenn Dorsey
If he didn’t seal a top 3 selection in the ‘08 draft last night,
people are going to be out of work soon. Dorsey was a constant
disruption to the Ohio State offense. He was the most talented and active player on the field for all4 quarters. His ability to split
the gap and pressure Boeckman was something we had waited to see all season.
2008 Verdict: 1st round pick
DT Marlon Favorite*
He’s playing in a three-man rotation, but next year will be his to
own. Favorite has the talent, but he hasn’t been the dominating force that he could be.
2008 Verdict: 3rd round pick
LB Ali Highsmith
Highsmith was the one LSU defender that was down-graded last night. His supporters point to his athleticism, but he did a very poor job of stopping the run last night and was constantly late into coverage. His angles were bad and he continues to convince that he is playing on emotion and athleticism, but not vision or instincts.
2008 Verdict: 2nd round pick
CB Jonathan Zenon
Not many people were giving credit to the LSU secondary before the game, but Zenon and his partners had a huge game shutting down a talented OSU passing game. While he is not the biggest corner, Zenon was able to run with the Buckeyes and looked good coming back to the ball and tracking it going deep.
2008 Verdict: 6th round pick
CB Chevis Jackson
Other than Dorsey, Jackson had the best game of any LSU defender. He broke up a big play that could have been an OSU touchdown, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass to seal the LSU victory. His cover skills were impressive and will certainly cause scouts to keep an eye on him in workouts and All Star games.
2008 Verdict: 4th round pick
SS Craig Steltz
In an embarrassing moment early in the game, Steltz was out ran by OSU’s Chris Wells for a 65-yard touchdown, but that was more of a bad angle than pure speed. Steltz does continue to draw questions about his athleticism, but his run support and jarring hits across the middle was slowing down the OSU passing game. Left the game early due to injury.
2008 Verdict: 3rd round pick
