Scott Pioli is a well-respected talent evaluator that has had his hands in many tremendous picks, over the years his strengths have been drafting impact defensive lineman for a 3-4 base like Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, and Vince Wilfork. Everyone was right there with Pioli, that Jackson was an ideal fit as 5 technique end given his measurables and strengths but I like most others did not have him as a top 5 pick. The jury is still out on Pioli’s three drafts so far and remember how depleted this roster was when he got there? The franchise is definitely in a better place overall.
Positions of Need
TE Tony Moeaki has shown flashes of being a solid contributor on offense but just when you think he is going to continue his growth and development an injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. Leonard Pope is basically a lineman who calls himself a TE, he is on pace for a career year with 20 catches on the year. Pioli wasn’t in New England when they drafted Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez but I am sure he is taking notice of what an impact TE can do for a passing game.
WR I imagine the Chiefs will be smart and find a way to lock up Bowe for a while but he is free agent in 2012 none the less, so I have to put this position as a need with the possibility, even as slight as it is they may lose Bowe. Jonathan Baldwin, a rookie out of Pittsburgh taken number 11 overall in 2011, after recovering from a broken hand from a preseason fight with teammate Thomas Jones, has shown the ability to make big plays down field with his huge catching radius. Steve Breaston is a solid number three wide out, not a number two, and definitely not a number one if Bowe leaves. Chiefs will be o.k. at WR if Bowe stays and Baldwin can continue to make strides but those are still ifs.
NT Ask most defensive coordinator what position is one of the most important in 3-4 defense and the answer will most likely be NT. Glen Dorsey a high draft pick in 2008 was drafted to play DT in a 4-3 base defense before Pioli got to Kansas City, they have moved him to DE opposite of Tyson Jackson. Kelly Gregg is the nose tackle and he has had many productive years with that 3-4 defense in Baltimore over the years but he is now 35 years old and its clear production has dropped off. Watch for the Chiefs to take a NT early in the 2012 draft.
C Casey Wiegman is 38 years old, Rodney Hudson a rookie that the Chiefs really like is the logical choice to replace Wiegman. Hudson has played both guard and center and is a possibility to replace Ryan Lilja at LG who is free agent in 2013. Either way the running game is very important to this offense and the Chiefs need to solidify not only the starters in the middle of that offensive line but get some better depth at the positions as well.
