Jake Golic Interview
Nick Ironside: What were your reasons for committing to Notre Dame? What was the single biggest reason?
Jake Golic: A few of the reasons why I committed there was because of the incredible education you can receive from there, and also the atmosphere of the fan base. And my biggest reason for committing there was because of my family tradition.
NI: How much of an impact did your dad and brother have on you committing to Notre Dame? Did you ever think about going anywhere else, and if so, where?
JG: I really had no desire to go anywhere else. My heart was set on Notre Dame since the day all the recruiting started. As for my dad and (brother) Mike, they were a huge part of my choice to go there for sure because of my dad going there, and Mike heading there soon.
NI: How did your visit go for the Blue-Gold game? Which game are you planning on going to for your official visit?
JG: The visit at the Blue-Gold game went incredibly smooth - I always enjoy going out there, and it was nice to meet all my future teammates. It’s hard for me to say which game I will be going to for my official visit because of my high school football schedule. A few dates still need to be set for our games.
NI: How much does it mean to you to play on at team with your brother in college and high school?
JG: It means the world to me. High school was unbelievably fun to play alongside of him, but not many people can say they played Division I football with their brother. That is something special
NI: What are your thoughts on what coach Weis has done in the offseason, in terms of being looser with the team?
JG: I strongly believe what Coach is doing during this offseason and it’s going to prove to be very effective during this coming season. I’ve always been a fan of a more relaxed coaching style. Some players would agree a more relaxed atmosphere makes for better place, come game time.
NI: What are your best traits as a tight end? What are your exact height, weight and 40 time?
JG: I would have to say my best trait at tight end is my aggression. I like to hit people and go for a solid block. Six-foot-four, 223 pounds, and my most recent 40 was a 4.68.
NI: Do you feel more comfortable catching the ball, or blocking?
JG: I feel equally comfortable in both aspects. I’m incredibly confident in my hands and I feel like I can throw a good block as well.
NI: What do you need to work on the most?
JG: I would have to say my route running. I feel like I could be a little sharper out of my cuts.
NI: Do you do any community service or any work for your school, a church group, or anything along those lines?
JG: Every summer I help at my head football coach’s football camp for fourth-to-eighth graders. That is always a good time and it feels nice to offer some tips to some younger players.
NI: What were your junior stats? What are your goals for your senior season?
JG: Junior year I had 21 catches for 410 yards and two touchdowns. My biggest goal for the senior season is to get us to the state championship. That would mean a lot to me.
