Johnson feels he has more to accomplish
by Nick Ironside
Former Kentucky Wildcat and current Buffalo Bill Steve Johnson spoke to Nick Ironside after being drafted in the seventh round of this weekend’s NFL Draft.
Former Kentucky wide receiver Stevie Johnson was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. Johnson, a wide receiver who made two prolific plays last season to win games against rivals Louisiana State and Louisville, received not one, but three phone calls on Sunday. Three phone calls that affected his future, and three calls that he’ll never forget.
“I get a call from the Dallas Cowboys talking about how they are trying to trade into the seventh round to get me or possibly a free agency signing,” Johnson started off saying.
“So I hung up with Dallas [Cowboys], and Miami [Dolphins] called saying they were going to select me. So I was ready to go to Miami [Dolphins].”
However, the call from the Miami Dolphins would not be the last time Johnson’s phone rang on Sunday.
“Then directly after that call I got a call from the Buffalo Bills saying they would select me. I was excited and relieved the waiting was all over.”
Johnson’s excitement still hasn’t worn off.
“The feeling is amazing. At first its like this isn’t really true. I’ve actually made it from Pop Warner playing as a youth, to making it to the NFL now as a professional. It feels great to just tell myself that, ‘I am a Buffalo Bill!’”
“Still unbelievable, however, I know this is reality and I am not satisfied with only being in the NFL. There is more to accomplish. I know this.”
Johnson doesn’t know much about the Bills yet, but one thing’s for sure. Johnson knew he would find something right as he steps out of the plane.
“I knew it was going to be cold. The coach told me about the veteran guys who were there, which I already knew, but he was telling me that they were pretty solid on slot or what not, but adding James (Hardy) and myself fills the void of a big wide receiver on the outside.”
Johnson will always remember last Sunday night, and will always remember the three phone calls that made his day. There however, are other specifics about the day he won’t forget as well.
“I also will remember them putting up the wrong stats as my name was selected, because the statistics were for a defensive lineman.”
