7 Round Small School Mock

by Luke Paul Chandler

Contributing reporter Josh Buchanan (D2Football.com) analyzes how the draft would go if only small school prospects were involved. First round analysis included.

By Josh Buchanan

1- 1- 1 Miami- CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State, 6′1, 182, 4.29
Miami fills one of its biggest needs. They wanted an offensive tackle here but it lacks value until the 15-20 range.

1- 2- 2 St. Louis- QB Joe Flacco, Delaware, 6′6, 237, 4.77 Flacco is not a need but gives the Rams a strong arm for the future. They feel he is the best on the board at this point so they pull the trigger.

1- 3- 3 Atlanta- QB Josh Johnson, San Diego, 6′3, 213, 4.53
Johnson reminds the Falcons of Michael Vick and gives them a playmaker both with his arm and legs.

1- 4- 4 Oakland- WR Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State, 5′9, 179, 4.37
Jackson is over drafted here but fills a need for Oakland, giving Russell a playmaker with Al Davis’ most loved physical - speed.

1- 5- 5 Kansas City- WR Jerome Simpson, Coastal Carolina, 6′2, 199, 4.44
Simpson gives Herm Edwards a playmaker with size and speed.

1- 6- 6 New York Jets- DE Kendall Langford, Hampton, 6′6, 287, 4.95
The Jets would like to get an end in this draft and Langford is the highest rated on the board.

1- 7- 7 New England from San Francisco- CB Antwaun Molden, Eastern Kentucky, 6′1, 198, 4.39
Molden could be the steal of the first round as many feel he would be a top-five small schooler.

1- 8- 8 Baltimore- DE Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb, 6′5, 274, 4.66
Johnston would have been a second rounder before his Pro Day, the Ravens fall in love with his workouts.

1- 9- 9 Cincinnati- DE/OLB Curtis Johnson, Clark Atlanta, 6′3, 237, 4.50
The Bengals take who they feel is the best player on the board and fill a need.

1-10-10 New Orleans- OLB Bryan Smith, McNeese State, 6′3, 240, 4.54
Smith was a sack master who the Saints convert to outside linebacker and it also fill a need.

1-11-11 Buffalo- WR Arman Shields, Richmond, 6′1, 194, 4.37
Shields is perhaps the most athletic gifted player in the small school ranks. He had better workout numbers than most of the FBS boys.

1-12-12 Denver- FS Corey Lynch, Appalachian State, 6′0, 202, 4.58
Denver needs a free safety and special teams playmaker. They feel like the Appalachian State star reminds them of another player they had. What is his last name again?

1-13-13 Carolina- WR Pierre Garcon, Mount Union, 6′0, 207, 4.42
Garcon gives Carolina a fast playmaker who could become a standout in the NFL.

1-14-14 Chicago- OG Kerry Brown, Appalachian State, 6′5, 305, 5.12
The Bears have shown a lot of interest in Brown and beat the Patriots out on him. New England starts thinking of trading up at this point to lock up Brown before the Bears make this pick.

1-15-15 Detroit- OT Thaddeus Coleman, Mississippi Valley State, 6′8, 308, 5.25
Coleman’s dominant performance impressed the Lions at the Texas game and thus they pull the trigger in the 1st round on him.

1-16-16 Arizona- P Mike Dragosavich, North Dakota State, 6′6, 212, 4.89
The Cardinals could use a better punter and are willing to take a risk on Dragosavich. They also consider Omon, Rinehart, and Felton with this pick.

1-17-17 Minnesota- OT/OG Chad Rinehart, Northern Iowa, 6′5, 311, 5.26
Rinehart is a great value pick here and gives the Vikings a versatile player who can play anywhere on the line.

1-18-18 Houston- RB Xavier Omon, NW Missouri State, 5′11, 230, 4.60
Houston needs to address the defense here but takes Omon to give them a backup with the potential to start down the line.

1-19-19 Philadelphia- OT Brandon Keith, Northern Iowa, 6′5, 345, 4.98
They want an offensive tackle back in this draft and feel that Keith has the best value of anyone on the board. Keith would have gone top 15 had it not been for inciting a riot in the last two months.

1-20-20 Tampa Bay- FB Jerome Felton, Furman, 6′0, 251, 4.68
Tampa doesn’t really need a fullback but they can’t let Felton fall anymore. He could even play tailback and that is a need.

1-21-21 Washington- OG Mackenzy Bernadeau, Bentley, 6′4, 306, 5.25
They fill their top need here and get the best lineman on the board at this point.

1-22-22 Dallas from Cleveland- CB Brandon Carr, Grand Valley State, 6′1, 207, 4.43
They would like to get a cornerback and feel that Carr could surprise with his outstanding physical tools.

1-23-23 Pittsburgh- ILB Shane Simmons, Western Washington, 6′1, 236, 4.58
Pittsburgh would like to get an offensive lineman here but don’t see one of value so they wait and take the most versatile linebacker in this small school draft. Simmons can play inside, outside, and star on special teams.

1-24-24 Tennessee- RB Chad Simpson, Morgan State, 5′9, 213, 4.42
Simpson is the best running back on their board available and gives Vince Young speed and a playmaker to a very average supporting cast.

1-25-25 Seattle- OLB Vincent Redd, Liberty, 6′6, 263, 4.56
Redd is not the 25th best player on the board but he has as good an upside as anyone and gives Seattle a potential steal, or bust, here.

1-26-26 Jacksonville- OT Demetrius Bell, NW State, 6′5, 297, 5.18
Bell has as good an upside as any lineman in this draft and could become a steal here. He also feels a need on the line.

1-27-27 San Diego- OT David Hale, Weber State, 6′6, 310, 5.27
Hale possibly feels one of their top needs and gives them a solid player opposite of McNeil.

1-28-28 Dallas- QB Brad Roach, Catawba, 6′6, 248, 4.77
Dallas would like to get a backup quarterback in this draft possibly and Roach is a great developmental prospect.

1-29-29 San Francisco from Indianapolis- ILB Joe Mays, North Dakota State, 5′11, 245, 4.70
Mays could very easily drop to the second round but gives them a tough defender to take pressure off Patrick Willis so they pull the trigger here.

1-30-30 Green Bay- CB Cary Williams, Washburn, 6′1, 187, 4.43
Williams fills one of their biggest needs and gives them a size/speed combo many NFL receivers struggle to make plays on.

1-31-31 New York Giants- WR/RS Jayson Foster, Georgia Southern, 5′8, 173, 4.40
This is not their biggest need but they doubt Foster is on the board for their next pick and they want a WR and return man so they kill two birds with one stone.
