OG, OT, DE, LB, CB, S – The Lions are going to have big decisions to make on upcoming 2012 free agents Jeff Backus (OT), Cliff Avril (DE), Stephen Tulloch (LB) and DeAndre Levy (LB – RFA). These are players in positions of need and it is assumed that they will all be signed. The Lions struggle to put together a quality offensive line is well documented. Center Dominic Raiola is 32, guard Stephen Peterman is 29 and Jeff Backus is 34. This offensive line struggles in the run game and it really has to play well to protect franchise quarterback Matt Stafford. An infusion of youth and talent across the offensive line is necessary. The Lions are not deep at any spot in the secondary and it is an area that needs to be looked at. An upgrade at corner and safety would do good things for the Lion pass defense. Linebacker is an area where a depth upgrade (assuming Tulloch and Levy are resigned) will be necessary. Defensive End Kyle Vanden Bosch is 33 with a history of neck problems and while he has been productive the injuries and age are a factor. The defensive end position is an area where the Lions do have some pieces in place but those pieces are more depth pieces. A talent upgrade at a spot where getting after the opposing quarterback is an area that needs to be looked at.
