See below as I sit down with Ohio State standout cornerback, Travis Howard for an interview about the upcoming NFL draft.
Scott Porter: What do you feel are your greatest strengths on the football field?
Travis Howard: I feel that one of my biggest strengths is my ability to play off man. Playing off man is definitely a hard technique to learn and perform but I feel I have done a very good job at it. I do a great job at pressing as I practice and work hard at it every day.
Scott Porter: What are your goals for the NFL level?
Travis Howard: My first goal is to get drafted. I want to put myself into the best situation possible and work hard to go as high as I can. I just want to catch the attention of 1 of the 32 NFL teams who will give me the opportunity to play at the next level. Other goals of mine are to come in and compete right away. That could be in the nickel or special teams or whatever they need out of me. I just want to compete and catch a teams eye. Whatever way I can help a team right away win football games. I just want to do what I do best and play football and compete and have fun.
Scott Porter: What do you feel are your greatest accomplishments?
Travis Howard: One of my greatest accomplishments in football is just being in the situation I am today. Attending Ohio State and going out there every day and having fun with this sport. I am living out a life long dream of mine. I am living out my dream. From a team aspect, going undefeated this season was a neat accomplishment. We are the 6th team in Ohio State history to accomplish that. One of my biggest and most important accomplishments is graduating from college. That was very important for me to do because you never know how long or far football can take you. It feels very nice knowing that I have that degree for life after football. That is something I can always look forward to if things don’t go as expected.
Scott Porter: What is the the toughest part about playing the cornerback position?
Travis Howard: I think being on an Island that comes with playing the position is a tough spot that you find yourself in. Playing man to man coverage one little thing can go wrong from your end and cost your team big time. A lot of time you have no help behind you to erase the smallest mistake you could make. With the cornerback position you have no idea what is coming at you. What routes are coming your way. You have to think fast and understand what is going on in the field of play at all times. You have to have great fundamentals and technique on each play. To play the cornerback position I think you have to be unique and athletic.
Scott Porter: What are some of your favorite memories while playing college football?
Travis Howard: My favorite memory that I will never forget is the atmosphere in the locker room after a win. There is nothing like it. We have been through a lot as a team. It takes a lot of hard work and being there with your teammates who have worked hard for each other to celebrate a win is very rewarding. To see people in that locker room after a game joyful and happy with big smiles on their face is a great feeling. Those are moments I will never forget.
Scott Porter: You got to play your final season with legend coach Urban Meyer. What has he taught you and how has he helped your game?
Travis Howard: I would definitely credit Urban for the competitive side he brought to us as players this year. He talks about being competitive and how important it is to have that drive in you. He taught us how to push our competitive nature and get the most out of us. He taught us to compete no matter what the situation is. He always reminds us the difference between winning and losing is about who wants it more. He brought a competitive nature to the Ohio State program. Urban preaches fundamentals and he teaches you to challenge yourself to get the most out of your ability and to work hard day in and day out.
Scott Porter: What hobbies do you have off the field?
Travis Howard: I like to relax in my free time. I like to watch a lot of movies. I also like to go bowling. My highest score is a 210. I like to be competitive away from the field as well as settle down and relax.
Scott Porter: What are you looking forward to the most about your opportunity in the NFL?
Travis Howard: I am looking forward to going out and showing teams that I can play and compete at the next level. I am looking forward to living out a dream and doing something that I have always loved and had a huge passion for. Playing in the NFL has been a dream of mine at a young age. I want to go in there and with a good attitude and play at a high level.
