Brian Lendino breaks down the team needs of the New Orleans Saints letting you know where the team’s focus will be this offseason during free agency and the 2012 NFL draft.
Drew Brees has made the New Orleans Saints the franchise that is currently is today and losing him would be catastrophic. With Brees, the Saints are legitimate Super Bowl contenders year in and year out.
Key Free Agents: Drew Brees (QB), Marcus Colston (WR), Robert Meachem (WR), Tracy Porter (CB), Carl Nicks (OG)
Quarterback: I’m not sure there are words to truly describe the importance of re-signing Drew Brees. It’s a move that can either have you set for the next five years or set you back five to ten. It’s that simple. I’m fully confident he’ll be a Saint next season; it’s just a matter of time.
Offensive Line: This team need is for both the tackle and guard position. Guard because I don’t see Carl Nicks returning and he’s one of the league’s elite offensive guards, replacing him won’t be easy. Outside of Jermon Bushrod, they could use another solid offensive tackle to add some skilled depth at the position.
Wide Receiver: With their two best receivers ready to hit the open market and Drew Brees being the clear top priority, the Saints find themselves in a sticky situation regarding Marcus Colston and Robert Meachem. Luckily, the Saints offensive system is built so any receiver with a lick of talent can produce, so the need may not be as pressing.
