Scott Porter: What type of person is an NFL team getting in Jamel Hamler?
Jamel Hamer: They are getting a guy that has no off the field issues. They are getting a guy who is very humble and appreciative of everything he gets. They are getting a guy who recognizes those who help him. They are getting a guy who just wants to get in there and compete hard for playing time. I will go through and carry on whatever tradition a team has. I will follow team rules and I just want to have fun and play the game.
Scott Porter: What do you feel are your biggest strengths?
Jamel Hamler: I think my greatest strength is my ability to make a play on the ball. I take pride in going out there and catching the big pass, I feel I can catch the ball when the QB throws it my way because I have the ability to go up and get the ball and make a play on it. I am good at out doing a DB for the ball and getting great separation and position on a DB.
Scott Porter: What do you feel is the toughest part about playing WR?
Jamel Hamler: That is a good question. I think one difficult aspect of playing WR is that when the ball is up in the air you have the entire defense coming after you to make a play on the ball and you are expected to still make the play. Picking up yardage after the catch is a difficult aspect in terms that you have to find a way to get those extra yards to extend drives. You have to run full speed while reading the defense and adjusting to what the defense is doing all while the defense is coming full speed at you trying to disrupt you. Another difficult aspect of playing the WR is that you are expected to run across the middle of the field and catch a tough pass in the middle of the field while DB’s and LB’s are taking full out shots at you. The defensive guys coming after you don’t have to worry about someone coming up and smacking them, they get to just read the play and take their best shot at you.
Scott Porter: What factors led to you declaring early as a Junior?
Jamel Hamler: There were some personal issues with my family that led me to declare. I put a lot of time and effort into thinking this over and I felt it was best for me to declare. My progression on the field over the years was also a major factor. It was more than just one thing that led to my decision. In the end it was a personal decision and some personal things played a huge role in my decision to declare.
Scott Porter: What are your goals for the NFL?
Jamel Hamler: My goals are to compete and to play at the highest level I can to compete with others in the NFL. I just want to showcase the talent that I have and compete with the best players around.
Scott Porter: Which NFL player reminds you of yourself?
Jamel Hamler: Mike Williams of the Seattle Seahawks. He is a taller guy who can run like a smaller WR once the ball is in his hands. He is a guy who has great size but he makes plays on the ball that remind me of myself.
Scott Porter: Who has been your biggest influence?
Jamel Hamler: My parents no doubt. They have been a huge influence to me and have always stuck by me. They are very proud of me and have been sticking in my corner since I started playing the game. They have always been there for me. They have been positive towards me no matter what the situation is.
Scott Porter: What will you miss most about college football?
Jamel Hamler: I will miss the atmosphere the most. I will miss the fans, the jam packed stadiums with excitement from students and fans in the stands. I will miss all of the build up to the game from the students and fans. I will miss my coaches, my teammates and just the atmosphere in general that college football has.
Scott Porter: What are your hobbies off the field?
Jamel Hamler: I like to just lay back and chill. I like to play video games, and I like spending time with my girlfriend. I am very laid back and chill off the field.
