Scott Porter recently sat down with Andrew McGee of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Andrew is a fast riser with great character.
Scott Porter: What do you feel are your biggest accomplishments?
Andrew McGee: My ability to step up and be a leader. We have a very young secondary and I have taken them on my shoulders. I have been the leader for a lot of young players on and off the field. It means a lot to be the leader of a lot of young guys learning the roots. I feel that has been a big accomplishment stepping into that role.
Scott Porter: What do you feel are your biggest strengths?
Andrew McGee: My physicality, I do not shy away from contact. A lot of cornerbacks don’t want to tackle and shy away from it. I love to tackle and hit. I am also very versatile. I played safety while I was playing at a junior college, and I have played very well at both positions.
Scott Porter: What player in the NFL reminds you of yourself?
Andrew McGee: I try and mimic my game after Antonio Cromartie of the Jets and Antoine Winfield of the Vikings. I love the way Cromartie plays and Winfield is the best tackling cornerback in the NFL, I like to tackle and hit like Winfield does.
Scott Porter: What are your goals at the next level?
Andrew McGee: My first goal is to make a team, after that have a good, long and successful NFL career. Making a living, helping my family is a goal of mine. I want to be the best player I can be. I want to work my way up to the Darrelle Revis level. I want to be one of the best when I am done.
Scott Porter: Can you describe your style of play?
Andrew McGee: I am an in-your-face style of cornerback. I like to play bump and run defense but really I can play in any defense. I like to make the WR mad all game and get him frustrated, get to his head a little bit. I have been classified as a Cover-2 cornerback but I feel I am very physical, aggressive and get the job done no matter what.
Scott Porter: Who has been your biggest influence?
Andrew McGee: My older brother has been my biggest influence. He got hurt playing college football and never got to live his dream of making it to the NFL. He wanted to play so bad, but never got the chance, so I feel like he has motivated me and I work harder for him seeing what he has been through. My dad has also been a major influence. He encourages me and both my dad and brother’s encouragement has meant a lot for me in my success.
Scott Porter: What are your hobbies off the field?
Andrew McGee: My biggest hobby is that I am very involved in my church and community. I am a member of the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).
Scott Porter: What are you looking forward to the most about your chance in the NFL?
Andrew McGee: Coming from what I came from it has just been a dream. Always been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, and I never knew if I would have this chance. I got hurt last year and was really down because I didn’t know if I would be in this situation this year. I have made the most of it. It just shows where God has brought me and the adversity I have overcome. I just want that chance.
Scott Porter: What type of person is an NFL team getting in Andrew McGee?
Andrew McGee: They are getting a give-it-all player. I have never and will never be in any trouble. I am a great kid, great character, help others out. I will do anything my coach is asking of me and more than what the coach asks of me. I will go out of my way to get things done. They are getting a player who will make plays and be a team leader.
